The racetrack’s environment has reflected the mining industry’s impact and the need to fast-track sustainability in the use of mineral resources

The ACCIONA | SAINZ XE Team took second place on the podium at the Copper X Prix, the Extreme E race held in the Atacama Desert (Chile). The ACCIONA team has thus achieved its best result in the two seasons of the first motor racing championship designed to raise awareness for the climate crisis.

The team led by Carlos Sainz and Laia Sanz has completed a weekend marked by a high competitive level, becoming the fastest team during training and in one of the qualifying rounds. Laia Sanz and Carlos Sainz are the only drivers in the series that have been present in each and every Final of the season so far.

Copper X Prix’s final, where it was able to choose the starting place thanks to being the team most voted by the fans, it remained in the fight for the podium despite suffering a strong impact on one of the rear wheels. Several penalties to their rivals for going off the track finally pushed the ACCIONA | SAINZ XE Team up to the second place.

This second podium finish for the ACCIONA team in the history of Extreme E – the first taking place at the Greenland race in the inaugural season – brings the team’s total to 60 points and puts it in the third place in the overall standings. With one round to go, the ASXE drivers are just eight points behind the leader of the Drivers’ Championship.

DRIVING CHANGE

Extreme E and ACCIONA are helping to raise awareness of the catastrophic effects of climate change, the ecological footprint in various endangered ecosystems and the need to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy.

In this way, the Copper X Prix in the middle of the Atacama Desert has brought spectators closer to images of the mining industry’s impact on the natural environment. Located near three of the world’s largest copper mines, it has sought to raise awareness of the urgency of the industry’s sustainable transition and the responsible use of mineral resources, which are crucial for the development of electric vehicles.

The race has also demonstrated the capabilities of electric mobility in high-performance sport. The Odyssey 21, the championship’s official electric SUV, did not lose power due to the altitude (at over 2,200 meters), which would have affected a combustion engine vehicle of the same kind.

SEASON’S END

The last race of Extreme E’s second season will take place in Punta del Este, Uruguay. The Energy X Prix will settle the final standings of the championship on November 26th and 27th.

In addition, the last round will feature a novelty in the championship, as it will be the first race where the public will be able to attend to follow the action live.
