Glaciers and permafrost areas in South America are visibly suffering the consequences of climate change. Their ecosystems are at serious risk of disappearing.

Mountain glaciers in South America and the ecosystems that depend on them are undergoing a worrying recession.

Tierra del Fuego is found in the southernmost part of Patagonia. The area is known as one of the world's final frontiers, one that is no stranger to the ravages of global warming and whose population is at risk: without ice there is no drinking water.

At the current rate of ice recession, most, if not all, of the cirque glaciers in Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego will disappear over the next two decades.

THE PROBLEM

The most noticeable consequences of climate change in Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego are the glacier margin recession, the thinning of the ice and the reduction of Andean areas under permafrost conditions, threatening survival in the region.

The rise in global temperature is challenging not only the wild flora and fauna that populate glacial ecosystems, but also the population centres, since the ice masses are the source of their drinking water.

SOLUTIONS

  • The Extreme E Scientific Committee is looking into initiatives for Tierra del Fuego which will be announced in the coming months.
